The discovery of this painting was also full of legendary meanings. Before verifying this painting was made by da Vinci, this painting was considered as being drawing by his student Giovanni Antonio Botelafeiou and thus ignored by the world people. Salvator Mundi was created by da Vinci when he was commissioned by King Louis XII of France in 1506 and later collected by the king of England Charlie I. After that it was passed on to Charlie II and disappeared since then. Until 1958, people began to find it from the property of British collector Francis Cook Knight in the 19th century. At that time, this painting had been damaged seriously, being greased, glazed and even coated in a synthetic resin. Therefore, Sotheby's auction house only sold it at the price of 45 pounds.
