What's the difference between japanese and chinese paintings?

The one thing that usually stands out to me is that old Japanese paintings seem to be more minimalist in nature - fewer colors used and greater use of empty space. Chinese paintings can also be this way, but I notice that it's more predominant in older Japanese art. Also Japanese tend to use those goofy Kabuki-style faces...just saying

Japanese paintings come from Japan and Chinese paintings come from China. Stylistically they can look very similar.
