The main objective was to complete a commission for the church. He was "asked" to portray the "last supper" with all the "characters" to show the event.
To Leo it was a challenge and a joy, because he got to depict the whole scene in his style and vision. At one or two points he changed some positions of people, there are under sketches seen on "xray" of the painting. He created a balance in the portrayal by reversing some poses and colours (as picked up in the DA vinci code) .
it relates to Leo's life in many ways, not least of which that he liked to add a certain spirit/soul to his portraits and included this in the last supper too, although i feel he was not a religious man,he had a spiritual nature.
He had a few run in's with the church and some of these are apparent in works like the last supper.
i feel too that he was a "stubborn" confident individual that had no truck with fools,no matter in what position, but was very capable of using those fool's to gain commissions.
Hope this is helpful !.

renaissance art is focused on giving a rather humanistic view of christianity. if you would observe art during the medieval period, images of jesus, the saints and all other deities is are not rendered in a realistic, humanistic manner, but rather to semi-abstract forms. the reason for this would be that such concepts are inconceivable to have human-like images simply because they are not mortal beings (the reason may be similar as to why in Islam, Muhammad does not have any depiction). rennaissance changed this idea, specially in its philosophy of gloryfying achievemnts of the human mind. as for davinci and the last supper, i think his objective is to depict the eventm as realistic and humanistic as possible. other than that, you may ask his patron.

Money mainly - he was commissioned to do the work. Whoever was paying for it will have dictated the subject matter and theme
