How was the scream turned into a murderer?

Well the scream was first a painting painted by Edvard Munch, but then the scream movies came out and the scream in that was a murderer, and was killing people. But the original painting had nothing to do with killing people, so how did people get that?

Because of his face... Would you rather that they made out the Scream movies to be about a lovy-dovy bunny that went around helping people solve their problems?

The painting wasn't going around killing people in the movie. The Scream movie had very little to do with Mr Munch. The mask may be inspired by the painting, but nothing more.
