Almost all his paintings are famous and all of them are shown at this linkhttp://www.diegovelazquez.org/the-compleā€¦
The best known is Las Meninas (the Maids in Honor). Other important pieces include The Coronation o fhe virgin; the Infanta Margarita; Old Woman frying Eggs; (next page): Pope Innocent X; forge of the Vulcan and many more.
He worked in the Baroque period when the style of art was characterized by great drama, rich, deep color, and intense light and dark shadows. As opposed toRenaissance art, which usually showed the moment before an event took place, Baroque artists chose the most dramatic point, the moment when the action was occurring, This is not always the case with Velasquez who was a highly individual painter. Two styles of painting associated with Velazquez are "realism" and "Baroque." He also used a painting technique called "chiaroscuro
His realistic approach to the human figure, painted directly from life and dramatically spotlit against a dark background, shocked his contemporaries
For definition of Chiaroscuro see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaroscuro
