How to Decorate Without Painting

0 votes
Although painting is always a reliable way to breathe some new life into a room, it is not always feasible. Painting can be messy and time-consuming or simply not permitted in a rental home. Fortunately, it is possible to give a room a new look without using any paint whatsoever by introducing color, texture and design elements in other areas and/or using wall decor to add interest to white walls. You can conceal the walls, decorate them or employ items in your decor that complement their starkness, depending on your style and preferences.

Add one or two interesting new pieces of furniture. One possible way to spruce up a room is to incorporate some new pieces of furniture. Choose furniture that works with your design plan. Bright pieces, such as a red leather sofa or lime green table, can serve as focal points in a contemporary room. Dark wood furniture works with almost any style of decor and provides contrast with plain white walls. Slipcovers can inexpensively allow you to instantly transform the appearance of your current furnishings.

    2
Hang new artwork, photographs or removable adhesive decals on the walls. It's possible to create an entire mural or border out of decals without leaving a trace when it's time for them to come down. Large pieces of artwork, or an arrangement of smaller pieces, can fill the blank space. It's no secret that white walls are always a safe background for displaying art. Use bright picture frames to hold black-and-white photos, which add both color and sophistication to the walls.

Install floating shelves in large arrangement to show off colorful accessories or special collections you have. White shelves can disappear into white walls, which works for a contemporary or modern style and allows the focus to remain on the items you're displaying. Colorful shelves are also possible if they don't clash with the furnishings or accessories being displayed.

Stretch and glue or staple fabric with a striking pattern over wood panels or large canvas pieces (use old artwork that you don't want any more) or simply cover the wood or canvas with decorative wallpaper. Hang the pieces on the wall just as you would artwork. Screens are also useful for concealing large expanses of wall.

    5
Use bright curtains in single-colored panels or drapes with intricate designs to add color and texture to a room. Floor-to-ceiling panels work in formal or expansive rooms. If you have plain window treatments, such as shades, bright valances can add a splash of color as well. Hang colorful fabric panels even if there are no windows, just to add color to the wall.

    6
Place a detailed rug in the center of the room to bring the focus in and away from the walls or hang a large intricate rug or colorful quilt on a large blank wall to add interest, warmth and color.

    7
Fill unoccupied spaces in the room with colorful accessories that will hold your attention to distract from the plain walls. For example, an interesting plate collection, groupings of vases, candle arrangements, interesting light fixtures or houseplants can all work to bring color and flair to the room.
