The right paint colors and designs can totally transform the look and style of your teen's room. Select a palette that suits your teenager's personality and color preferences. Choose to use one main color or a combination of two or more colors to create the look you want. Ask your teenager to get involved in the decorating process -- it is, after all, her room. Bring paint swatches home and compare these with existing decor in the room to get an idea of what colors blend well with the furniture and decor.

1    Talk to your teenager about what style he wants in his room. Ask about his favorite colors and if he would like to use one main color or several colors. Go to your local home improvement store and pick out paint swatches.

2    Ask your teen if she would like one accent wall or the entire room painted, or if she would like polka dots or stripes or another motif painted on the walls. Decide on one main color or several colors.

3    Remove the furniture and decor items from the room or place all the furniture in the middle of the room. Put an old sheet over the furniture to protect it. Your teen can sleep on the couch for a few days while you paint the room.

4    Paint with a solid color, such as pastel pink, purple or baby blue for a teen who has French country style furniture. This also works well for a teenager who likes simple decor. Medium blue works well for a male teenager who just wants a simple look in his room. Paint all the walls and leave the ceiling white.

5    Paint one accent wall forest green, plum or burgundy for a teen who wants a more dramatic, modern look in her room. This style works well for a sophisticated teen who has dark cherry wood furniture and stylish decor.

6    Paint polka dots or a wall mural for a teen who is outgoing and wants something out of the ordinary. You may need to hire an artist to help you paint a mural, unless you or your teen possess artistic ability. Pink or purple polka dots on the walls can dress up the room with color and charm.

7    Paint stripes in any color for a teen boy's room or teen girl's room. Choose several different shades of the same hue to create your stripes, such as baby blue, deep blue and medium blue. Create a pattern of stripes all over the room.
Painting stripes requires a simple technique. Paint a light background color first on all the walls and allow it to dry for two days. Place a laser level tool at the bottom of the wall to create a long line that starts from the base of the wall to the ceiling. Place blue painting tape over the red laser line. Make sure that the tape is perfectly straight and aligned with the line. Do this all over the room and create gaps according to how big you want your stripes. Use a ruler to measure the distance between each piece of tape. You can make your stripes 5 inches apart or 8 -- or more or less -- depending on your preferences. Paint between each piece of tape with a different color other than the background of the wall. Allow the paint to dry for two days and follow these same steps to create more stripes in different colors all over the walls. For a modern look, paint horizontal stripes.
