In China, the beautifully crafted silk and paper parasols were traditionally used to protect a person from the elements; however, because of the craftsmanship and expense they were often a symbol of status and wealth.
Chinese parasols have become a popular staple at fairs, weddings, parties and even in everyday life. These beautiful functional art pieces can be used to shade your skin from the sun and rain, add style to outfits and complement costumes as well as decorate spaces. Making your own is an affordable way to personalize your parasol.
Decide what you want to paint on your parasol. Unless you are a good artist, you may want to prepare your pattern on the computer so that you have a guide to follow.
How you do this depends on the programs you have available; however, many people have luck using Microsoft Word.
Enlarge the image or font size until it is the size you want.
Print.
Painting the Pattern
Tape the printed image face up to the underside of your parasol where you want it to be.
You can either trace the design, gently so as not to puncture the paper or fabric, or skip right to the next step and begin painting.
Following the pattern, paint the design in the colors of your choice.
If you are using more than one color, allow each to dry before starting the next to avoid smudging and mixing, unless that is the effect you are seeking.
After the paint has dried, gently remove the paper patterns.
Glue on any embellishments, such as gemstones, and allow to dry before using the parasol.
