I want to use a copy of this painting on a calendar page, but intend to substitute another face for the one in the painting. Is this prohibited by any copyright laws?

the painting has been around for over 100 years, it is well known ,so you should not use it, just take the image find a Friend and photograph her in a strapless dress, then it is his idea, but your interpretation, do you understand what the portrait is about, she was a independent lady , she had one of the straps of her dress off her shoulder , this caused a scandal, was considered sex porn, , the city demanded the painting be repainted with the strap up. the painting is owned by the Des Moines, Art Center, so they own the rights to the image

The painting itself is not under copyright, but any reproduction or photograph of it will be. So, you cannot use it on a calendar that you intend to sell or anything that is intended for more than personal use.
