A term used in fine-art printmaking, where the plate is inked up with two or more colors, each applied separately by hand using a small pad of fabric. (Rather than using a brayer to ink the plate.) Doing this enables you to run the plate through the printing press once only, rather than several times, in order to produce a print with multiple colors in it. The disadvantage is that it can be harder to produce identical prints for an edition than if you used individual plates for each color.

From Frenchpoupée meaning doll, a reference to the ball-shaped wad of fabric that is used to ink the plate
