Between sleeping, dressing, studying and sleepovers, a girl can spend half of each day in her bedroom. So it's important to decorate her room the way she likes. Choose colors, themes, patterns and special items that suit her personality to make her room stand out from all others in the home.

    Colors
The easiest way to decide which colors to use in a girl's bedroom is to ask her which are her favorites. Even if you know, be sure you know which shades of each color she prefers. There's a big difference, for example, between pale blue and navy. For a girl who doesn't express preference choose soft pastel colors--and avoid dark colors like black and red unless you're confident she likes them.

    Theme
Every girl has hobbies and dreams. When designing a girl's bedroom integrate these elements into the motif. For a budding photographer, order custom wallpaper featuring some of her pictures. An athlete might enjoy seeing her favorite uniform hanging on the wall in her room. Your design doesn't have to focus on a theme, but it's a safe way to decorate for a girl who has an enduring passion.

    Patterns
Patterns on walls, bedding and other elements of the bedroom can dramatically affect overall design. A room with pink walls, for example, looks very different from a room with pink polka dots on the walls. Polka dots and plaid are classic patterns that allow you to incorporate a lot of colors in the room, but the theme you choose may play a large role in which patterns you select. For example, you might buy wallpaper or bedsheets with an Eiffel Tower pattern if she has interest in France, or a paw print if she likes animals.

    Special Items
Emphasize the concept of sanctuary in her bedroom. A girl with siblings may not have as much time as she would like to use the bathroom mirror, for example. Place a vanity or full-length mirror in her bedroom so that she doesn't have to leave to get dressed in the morning. For girls who share a room--or in a girl's room where there is a French or Japanese theme--a dressing screen adds a space where she can change her clothes in privacy.
