Blue is a cool color, associated with calm and peace. Shades of blue, when combined on the walls of a room, create a soothing, Zen-like backdrop for your furnishings. This property makes blue an especially appropriate color to paint the walls of a bedroom, where calm and peace are most appreciated and suitable for the room's purpose.
Visit your local home improvement store and choose paint swatches in a variety of shades of blue.
Compare the swatches to your furnishings and room accessories. You are looking for two shades of blue that will either match, or at least not clash with, the furniture. For a room that has natural hardwoods and cool, earth-tone furniture, light and medium gray blue will fit nicely. For a room with bold, vibrant colors across a spectrum, a non-muted, sky blue and a lighter variation of this blue will be appropriate.
Purchase the two shades of blue you selected.
Designate one of the walls of your room to be an accent wall. The accent wall will be painted in one of the shades of blue you have chosen, and the other three walls will be painted in the other shade of blue. The purpose of an accent wall is to add depth and visual interest to a room while remaining within the boundaries of a specific color scheme. Paint the walls as you would with any other color. Use paint tape to mask the edges of the walls between the two different colors.
