Why Linen Is The preferred Material for Canvas Painting ?

After the 16th Century, the painting relied mainly on the canvas. In a large number of hemp and cotton fabrics, pure linen is the ideal selection of canvas painting .

One, in addition to synthetic fibers, the linen is the most solid material among all the textiles with much fiber, uneasy tear or puncture, which allows the palette knife to scrape pressure on it.

Two, the dense linen woven by the latitude and longitude a line is with good color performance.

Three, twisted by threads, the surface of linen is not as smooth as that of chemical fiber and cotton cloth with lively and concave-convex texture. Artists often use this subtle interesting beauty of linen.

Four, linen and flax seed oil are obtained from the same plant and have identical chemical properties which can support each other.

Five, the linen fabric can be divided into single and double fabric which can be easily to be processed into a variety of specifications with different thickness, different thickness and textures. Coarse linen is suitable for large scraper painting, which is the ideal canvas fully and delightfully making snap. Medium density linen is very smooth with uniform texture, which is the most suitable performance method for realistic style rubbing cover. Fine texture linen is mainly used in small works, which is suitable for miniature painting style.

Due to the differences of texture and thick degree, the sold lengths vary greatly.

The price of pure linen is very high, thus the cheap varieties of half-linen and cotton-blended appear. With the expansion and contraction of cotton and linen according to the variation of moisture, thus the blended fabric is not suitable for large canvas.
