There is no one founder of expressionism. The Wikipedia identifies Herwald Wald in his magazine der Sturm as coining the term, but he was talking about der Brucke painters like Kirchner and Blaue Reiter painters like Kandinsky, who essentially saw themselves as building on the work of post-Impressionists such as the Belgian James Ensor or the Frenchman Paul Gauguin.
