What is Comparative Color Technique in the Oil Painting?

Contrasting color in the oil painting is completely with the effect of strong colors. Use the richest color with brush or palette knife and then quickly scrape the color with palette knife and only leave a thin color effect. Then, ease the relatively complementary color or gray on the strong tone. The too vulgar colors at first can be covered by various contrast colors (do not force hybrid) to make them elegant and achieve a harmonious effect.

To the beginners’ surprise, how quickly and easily the warmest colors become the cold tone and the most intense colors turn weak. If the works become weak, we must start from the beginning of the strong colors and be decisive to use the strongest color contrast, namely the warmest or coldest tone. And then make the relationship in harmony without weakening its original color effects, here is varied and the color of the connected or interval to achieve certain effects. Using comparative color technique can endow the oil painters with the extraordinary ability and rapid painting techniques.

Although the body shaped by the Impressionism and its unique colors are subject to the overall object of the moment, today's artist is using the color contrast, starting from the single strong color. For example, a painter is attracted by the bright blue and he finds its contrasted things and draws his paintings according to the carefully estimated contrast colors. At the same time, the painter also carefully makes the contrasting test and pays attention not to make the color quality damage due to too much correction. This painter puts some colored paper or other materials in some parts of the painting temporarily and tries to figure out the kind of color effect he has considered. In this way, the artist can replace the red with green clothes to test its effect, and does not damage the painting. In the comparative color technique, "Valeurs" means the gorgeous color changes, which plays an important role in the painting. A dull and vulgar contrast color development is very harmonious for the painting as a whole, the effect is quite subtle. Each color’s location is carefully considered one by one according to the bias and the overall need. Therefore, the paining becomes a unity. By changing the color contrast of changes in temperature can obtain the most beautiful effect, like the contrast between the warm red cheeks and bright cold red lips.

It is apparent that any painter who is sensitive to color knows how to arrange all the colors, so that they can merge into the main tone. Today, many painters are in the pursuit of a flat and bright color effect like the murals and deliberately paint in this way. Seek a kind of extensive flat overall color effect, and avoid letting some light and dark local looked highlighted. The light foundation, such as chalk with cotton, common ochre colored provides the conditions for the comparative color technique. Paint in colors with little change and complete the painting while wet in one or two days. The toner with large fluidity which contains a small amount of poppy seed oil of turpentine, and refined petroleum products, pure p-xylene, decalin and other essential oils are used by painters, therefore the pigments used by painters are almost like those in water color paintings. Obviously, the comparative color technique must moderately use the toner which has strong dilution on the pigment. Many people also use such a skill that scrapes the coating with a palette knife thick paint in order to draw the new rich colors in these flat and thin colors.
